Authortunities #42 Jan. 6—Feb. 3
Six Word Reviews ➕ EYW Submissions Open ➕ FREE Space and Time #35 from March 1976 〓 100+ author opportunities for you!
As this pops into your inbox I will be afk in the next town over babysitting a grandchild trying to read Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Betsy Lewin without my usual commentary about worker’s rights. If I have to choose between a soapbox and a sleepy child I will forgo the soapbox… until she’s older. I like no drama bedtimes.
And speaking of dramas… This week on My Writes I wrote up my confession about how I have been a hypocrite and now have a new goal to write 663 six word reviews over the next year. That’s only 3,978 words, right? Less than a short story. You can read “Walking My Talk…” here… and my first review attempt.
AAPI Hour │ The label "Asian" gets thrown around as a generic way to describe what is classified, in many Western cultures, as a minority, and yet Asians are the largest racial group in the world. So what does it mean to be “Asian?” Let’s find out with Lee Murray │ New Zealand’s only Shirley Jackson Award winner.
📚 Anyone interested in some intelligent and lively discussion on Racial Self-Identification is welcome to attend the next Harvard Diversity Discussion this Thursday, January 11 from 5-6 pm EST. I’ve gone to a few of these and I never fail to walk away with new perspectives and understanding encouraged by this friendly and open minded group. This next meeting I’ll be offering my own perspectives on the topic for a few minutes. Open to the public, register for free at 🔗https://cutt.ly/Multiraciality
🎥 Submissions for February’s Exercise Your Writes opens up this Sunday, January 7. Watch the last episode here to get an idea of what kind of videos you can submit. The first episode in the new format was a mix of song, poetry and prose but don’t let that limit you. Send in your most creative presentations. Details on how to submit are here.
Yes, I know the page needs to be updated… this will happen when I’m back in town.
🚀As usual, here is your free issue of Space and Time magazine! This week’s issue is #35 form March 1976. It will be free from now until Wednesday, January 10, 2024, 11:59 PM PST.
Whenever you read for free on Amazon you support authors with your Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count (KENPC). As much as we all want to support each other, very few of us can afford to buy every book. Reviews, shares, likes and KENPC are all easy ways to support your favorite artists. 🧡🧡🧡

The best thing I read on Substack this week is Stephanie Wytovich’s “December '23 Madhouse Recap” on her
which is a cozy and lovely read on “Yuletide Cheer, Mythology, and End-of-Year Thoughts.” I especially appreciated the beautiful photos from a visit to the “holiday flower show at Phipps.” I don’t know what Phipps is, but I enjoyed their holiday displays.Last week’s poll asked “Do you keep New Year's Resolutions?”
5% say “Yes”
27% say “No”
18% of you say “Sometimes”
50% of you say you “loathe the idea”
Well… please don’t hate me but I love New Year’s resolutions. I love the idea of a fresh calendar to mark up with my best intentions. I know I won’t make most of them. I just like aiming at wishing stars. Sometimes I hit one. I also have annual quarterly and half-year check in dates with myself in my calendar. *prepares to duck rotten fruit*
✅ Time for a new poll! Voting stays open for the next three days, and I’ll share the results in next week’s Authortunities. This week let’s keep it simple with:
