There are many beautiful aspects of living in Brazil, but my favorite happens almost every morning at dawn. Surprisingly, it's not the rising sun that captivates me. It's watching the trees exhale clouds into existence.
At first, mist rises gently from the treetops in delicate tendrils, gradually gathering into thicker layers that drift upwards, merging together into great, sweeping clouds. These formations skim the mountain peaks, growing and evolving as they rise, before they eventually float off to travel the globe. At their best, these clouds distribute essential rains. Without direction, however, they can unleash devastating storms.
We often perceive mentorship as flowing in one direction from mentor to mentee like a stream, but this represents only part of the relationship. Taking a macro view reveals mentorship as a collaborative cycle: just as a stream feeds into the sea and rises again as rain, the most rewarding mentoring relationships are reciprocal, with knowledge and inspiration flowing in both directions.
Last week, I expressed gratitude for the mentors who've profoundly influenced my writing journey. Their impact continues to shape me, but I learned early that successful mentorship requires effort from both sides. It’s not a passive experience. We receive from the relationship as much as we invest into it.
Just as water exists in various forms, mentors also come in diverse forms. On one end of the spectrum are close family members and friends. They can be deeply supportive, emotionally invested, and unconditionally encouraging, yet they often lack objectivity, overlooking flaws and providing advice colored by personal biases.
At the other extreme are professional consultants. They offer highly objective, data-driven, and impartial guidance based on extensive industry knowledge. However, their advice can feel impersonal, purely results-focused, and emotionally detached.
Somewhere between these extremes is the mentor, who blends professional expertise with emotional support and practical knowledge. While mentors often focus on performance, their true value lies in fostering holistic growth, encouraging a maker’s development across all aspects of their career.
Research consistently shows that active mentees experience increased confidence, empowerment, and career satisfaction.
In Step 6 of “Avery Maker’s Journey”, Avery encounters their first mentor and realizes the profound importance of active engagement within the mentoring relationship. Like Avery, you may discover your creative path becomes clearer and more rewarding when fully embracing mentorship.
Mentorship is a powerful exchange that thrives on mutual investment. Are you ready to be mentored? Reflect on what you seek from mentorship and consider how you'll actively participate in this transformative experience.
Do you know a good mentorship program? Share your insights and stories. I’d love to hear how mentorship has illuminated your creative path!
Here are some of my favorites.
Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA) Mentorship Initiative
Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) Writer to Writer Mentorship Program
Local Writers' Groups & Libraries (often have mentoring programs or can recommend local mentors).
Community Colleges & Universities (many offer workshops and structured mentorship opportunities).
Coming Next Week…
Ready to amplify your mentorship experience? I'll share practical strategies to ensure you’re getting the absolute most from your mentor from setting clear goals, tracking progress, and cultivating a relationship that nurtures your creative growth. This fall I’ll be hosting a guided nine day challenge to explore this path together to launch my book, The Makers Tao.

I just applied to a mentorship program. There are only six available mentors, so I have a strong possibility of not being chosen (and honestly not sure if any of them are a good fit). But I’m rolling the dice and letting fate decide.
I think you are a great example of a mentor. Not only do you understand who the person is, you understand what their potential is. You encourage growth and possibility but never push rather suggest. It falls to the individual to run with it. And that's when growth can occur. I have grown tremendously under you. And in taking larger steps on my own, I know, that you will always be there if I have any questions or insecurities. It is the most giving thing a mentor can do. And in return, I don't bug the crap out of you 24/7 about it! I respect that you actually do have a life as well. I understand that you believe enough in me to know I can do this. But, I do know, that you'll always be there for me if I need you :)
