Toni Morrison wrote these words back in 2015 in The Nation. Her essay, “No Place for Self-Pity, No Room for Fear” is as relevant today as it was then. I’ve heard from so many friends this past week who have expressed how utterly lost they feel. You aren’t alone. But now it’s time to get busy.
Toni Morrison continued. “This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do language. That is how civilizations heal.”
And healing is what we need. The US system was broken before last week, we know this. Taxes, healthcare, education, cost-of-living… pick your crisis. Whoever we voted for, we are in it together now.
If you are here, it’s a safe bet that you “do language.” This is our moment to bring our words to the table with purpose and power. Time to work.
