I might soon say goodbye to Instagram, inspired by
’s “Goodbye, Instagram” post where she re-evaluates her own social media platforms. It set me thinking. The tangled web of new platforms have become drama farms. Do I dare hit the unsubscribe button?Substack, however, I love. I’ve met beautiful, genuine people over here. I don’t know what your dinner looked like last night… and that’s wonderful. I do know what you many of you are thinking because you’ve left comments or messaged. That’s what I care about.
Will I take the plunge and, as they say here in Brazil, foi de arrasta pra cima? Tune in next week and find out. I wrote more about it in “We Don’t Have to Be Here.”
What’s Been Going On…
🟠 Authortunities celebrates one year on March 13. Next issue will have some celebrations, gifts and I’ll share what has worked for me here, and what hasn’t. This week and next have no paywall as we do some spring cleaning on all our listings.
🟠As always, Jonathan Maberry was a shining star in his latest Jonathan Maberry: The Art of Writing and Selling Horror Fiction workshop, shared in the last few newsletters. If you missed the workshop, he has an excellent page of free resources for writers you can make use of here.
🟠I enjoyed “Leveraging Substack and Public Speaking to Monetize Your Passion” by
over on FundsForWriters.com. I also found on Substack this week with his new pub . He was EIC at Space and Time for a few issues back in 2021. He’s a great guy writing great stuff.🟠I’ve also been working along with
’s “March Workshop: Launch & Grow a Newsletter to Boost Your Writing Career” workshop on . I imagine my own newsletter will evolve throughout the month as I follow along. Have I learned anything yet? Yes, a tagline describing the mission of my newsletter is way better than me telling you how many countries Authortunities has spread to (42!). This is the tagline I came up with. Too much?Anyways, if you are interested in having a newsletter at all (and you probably should be) head on over to
and get in on this workshop!🟠To celebrate Women in Horror Month, this week I read “Yaka Mein Lady” by Vivian Chou. It’s free to read at heartlines-spec.com.
🟠Kandisha Press is hosting the Women in Horror Interview Series. There are so many excellent names… I’m honored to be April 21’s WiH. Find that series here… if you dare. Kandisha Press is coming back from a hiatus, so watch that space for submissions to open as well.
🟠Happy 3rd birthday to Strong Women - Strange Worlds, a regular group author reading event. If you'd like to get them a present, please subscribe to their YouTube channel. They are trying to get 500 subscribers by the end of this month. As of this moment, they are currently at 137 subscribers. Happy birthday to a great group of ladies! Subscribe to their YouTube here.
🟠New to BookFunnel promos? You can sign up for the free NEW BookFunnel Orientation: Intro to Promos & Swaps here. Taught by Jack Shilkaitis, he’s also a really good sci-fi author. I just picked up Bad Bishop (Scions of Oth Book 1) here on Amazon.
Oh, and in case you missed it… (yes, I am that geek).
What’s Happening in Space and Time?
We are moving fast to get this issue into your eager hands. Between fiction, nonfiction and poetry, the upcoming #146 is bursting with 30 authors. Art is being created for 11 original stories. I should have it all back by April 8. We’ve invited all the authors to send us a one minute video of them giving some extra insight and inspiration for their creation as well as reading a bit of it. Our Master of Layout Anthony R. Rhodes is currently using his artistic eye to come up with brilliant poetry layouts.
While you are waiting for the next issue, there's always free Space and Time! This week’s free issue is #9 from August 1969. It will be free from now until Wednesday, March 13, 2024, 11:59 PM PDT. Get your free issue here: 🔗 https://amzn.to/3SSvxo4
A big thank you to everyone who reads for free. This boosts our Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count (KENPC). As much as we all want to support each other, who can afford to buy every book? Reviews, shares, likes and KENPC are all easy ways to support your favorite authors.
I’d love to know you better. Here’s a seven question survey about what writers want.
And finally, thank you to all the great sources we get our author opportunities from. You can find a list at 🔗https://angelaysmith.com/subscribe/
