Authortunities #48 Feb. 17—Mar. 16
Bake Your Own Cake! ➕ S&T Submissions Update ➕ FREE Space and Time #32 from September 1975 〓 100s of author opportunities for you!
Good morning! I owe an apology to C. Hope Clark and all my readers for my rant last week. I have a trigger, and it’s being told to stay in my lane. If I spent my life following rules I would be nowhere. I feel like that’s just where the rule makers want us—nowhere and waiting for crumbs. Today we can all bake our own damn cakes. Maybe this newsletter is me sharing my recipe.
I understand the argument for people to ‘earn their place’ but there is a difference between that and holding someone down, or back. Who would direct a house builder not to ‘cheat’ with modern tools? So why do we expect writers, who exchange months of hard work for pennies, to do just that?
But now my apology has turned into another rant and I’m about to head out of town for Grandma Duties, aka hypocritical rule maker: No, you can’t eat that off the ground. No, you can’t run in the street. No, you can’t stick a fork in that… but always yes to cake.
Space and Time Submissions Report
Many, many rejections have gone out, so if you received one, remember: rejections are not a reflection of you or your work. There isn’t enough paper (or money) for all the yesses I want to give. Keep going. As of this moment, we have 72 submissions of poetry and prose under consideration. So many good ones… I hope to announce the fiction selections here next week.
🚀Free Space and Time! This week’s free issue is #32 from September 1975. It will be free from now until Wednesday, February 21, 2024, 11:59 PM PST. Get your free issue here: https://amzn.to/42Hv0d6
A big thank you to everyone who reads for free. This boosts our Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count (KENPC). As much as we all want to support each other, who can afford to buy every book? Reviews, shares, likes and KENPC are all easy ways to support your favorite authors. 🧡🧡🧡
I was pretty stoked this week to find out this newsletter is being read across the US and in 40 countries… but now I want more. If you are from any of the greyed-out countries in the graphic, send me a message to authortunities@substack.com and I’ll gift you a lifetime pro-level subscription.
Extended Audiobook Experiment
Thank you to everyone who chimed in on KDP Virtual Voice. The main reason I am enthusiastic about KDP’s new Virtual Voice TTS is because it allows more people to have audiobooks, but the human voice is better. However, if my choice is between no audiobook or a decent one, I’ll take decent. But now I have a new thing to try.
I attended one of the excellent Bookfunnel workshops this last week (sign up here) and the topic was producing audiobooks. Jack @BookFunnel talked about the traditional method, Text-To-Speech/Virtual Voice and something I’d never thought of… recording it myself using free Audacity and my regular computer mic. That pleases my subversive little trash panda soul so I’ll give it a try and report back here.
As far as the Virtual Voice recordings, after the initial Beta, Amazon seems to have slowed things down. Beta only lasted about two weeks and I published two audiobooks in that time. Amazon sent me a questionnaire and then nothing in my KDP bookshelf showed up as eligible anymore.
Now KDP seems to be rolling out limited invitations on ebooks. You won’t get any notification, but if you check, you might have something eligible. During Beta they were approving audiobooks within the hour. Now, if you get an eligible ebook it’s still pretty fast, Maybe the Virtual Voice is why all the non-audiobooks seem to take longer.
If you do have an eligible ebook, you will find it here.
The ebooks as Effective Promotion Experiment
Thanks to things moving slower in KDP during the Beta, it took me longer than expected to get my 12 ebooks accepted for pre-order. Everything is now ready and the experiment will be live on February 21.
The Question: Do eBooks make free, effective promotions?
How I’ll Test This: Making use of KDP free promotional days, low pricing and links to this newsletter, I’ll run a campaign to see if ebooks seem to affect my subscriber base at all. Each ebook has a paragraph at the end introducing Authortunities with a link for a free pro-level month.
This begins on February 21 with How to Break Up: Poinsettia Creams. That book will be free for three days after it goes live. The previous book, How To Start Over: Destroy With Love, and Thorn (dark fantasy by Ryan Aussie Smith) will be free on the 21st. Rinse and repeat so that when a new book releases, all the other books in the collection are free. How to be an Authortunist will also be free on the 21st.
I’ll keep records and share of how many subscribers and engagement I have for Authortunities so we can decide if it seems to have made an impact or not. Reporting weekly. Here’s where the newsletter stands right now:
Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote in last week’s poll: “Would you consider Virtual Voice for an audiobook?” The results:
✅That’s 67% of you either willing or open to the idea of having Text-To-Speech narration. In the Bookfunnel Audiobook class I was in earlier this week, Jack talked about the exploding field of audiobooks and stated it’s not a question of should you have audiobooks, but how and how soon. I’ll try to put something together with Audacity and my regular headphones this week and share how it turns out. And now, new poll!
And finally, thank you to all the great sources we get our author opportunities from. You can find a list at 🔗https://angelaysmith.com/subscribe/
