Authortunities #43 Jan. 13—Feb. 10
Space & Time Submissions Open: Solution Revolution ➕ More Cowbell! ➕ FREE Space and Time #38 from September 1976 〓 100+ author opportunities for you!
We are two weeks in to the new year and so far so good… except RIP to my fantastic Six Word Review plan. Amazon rejected mine with the claim that reviews must be a minimum of 20 words to be posted. Heresy! I swear I’ve seen one word reviews before. Is this a new policy or am I imagining things?
❗🚀 Space & Time magazine opens to submissions from on January 15-31 for speculative poetry and prose with the theme “Solution Revolution.” There’s a lot going wrong right now. In this issue I want to see answers but they don’t have to be warm and fuzzy.
Example: dogs evolve with opposable thumbs, take over the world and bring about world peace by putting people on leashes. I’d read that. 🐶
Payment is $5 per poem or $0.01 USD per word for prose plus a digital contributor copy. We buy first print, electronic and audio rights. Rights revert to the author upon publication. Submissions accepted in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French or Italian.

This week on AAPI Hour │ My idea of doing written interviews has already morphed into a show. This week is an exploration from a “multi-racial, second-generation diasporic Okinawan” viewpoint, namely Mariko Middleton │Podcaster, Activist and Future Hajichaa.
🎥 You have one more day to submit to February’s Exercise Your Writes. Submissions close on Sunday, January 14. Watch the last episode here to get an idea of what kind of videos you can submit. Details on how to submit are here.
I swear I’ll get that page updated this week…
🚀Enjoy your free issue of Space and Time magazine! This week’s issue is #38 form September 1976. It will be free from now until Wednesday, January 17, 2024, 11:59 PM PST.
FYI: Whenever you read for free on Amazon you support authors with your Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count (KENPC). As much as we all want to support each other, very few of us can afford to buy every book. Reviews, shares, likes and KENPC are all easy ways to support your favorite artists. 🧡🧡🧡

Reader Accomplishments
🧡 From LindaAnn LoSchiavo: Offsetting the Bleak How to plot the narrative arc when a chapbook is filled with grimness? When I decided to line up four poems I had already published about being my terminally-ill mother’s sole caregiver, a sly notion tapped my shoulder: sub-plot. In late-stage cancer there’s no hope; nevertheless, readers need contrasts, changes in rhythm and pace.
Greenery came to my rescue. The 24 poems in “Cancer Courts My Mother” (Penumbra, 2024) have a funicular movement. As my patient’s condition worsens, her garden and houseplants improve, providing friendly green company as I pen her eulogy.
To read more about planning a narrative arc, see a recent article of mine, “Poets: Fast Forward Your Path to Book Publication” by LindaAnn LoSchiavo
🧡 From Harris Coverley: Back in October my short story "Landslide" was published in the new anthology The Black Beacon Book of Horror from Black Beacon Books, edited by Cameron Trost, along with my crime fiction story “If You Can Smell It, You’re Already Deep In It” in the new issue of the anthology magazine CRIMEUCOPIA titled Rule Britannia — Britannia Waves The Rules, out from Murderous Ink Press. In December I achieved a small dream and had my story "Malevolence" published in Hippocampus Press's Penumbra: A Journal of Weird Fiction and Critcism, edited by S.T. Joshi. I also have a story coming in A Darker Continent: Strange Tales of Europe at War, edited by John Linwood Grant for Belanger Books, out later this year.
Thank you to LindaAnn and Harris for sharing! You have a 3 month paid professional level subscription heading your way to celebrate.
❗ Open to all Authortunities readers — share your news! Send a 100 word write up of your publishing news to authortunities@substack.com and I’ll comp you a 3 month paid professional level subscription to say congratulations.
The best thing I read on Substack this week is “Now on Substack - elitism, condescension and dogpiles” from Elizabeth Tai’s
. Elizabeth touches upon, in my humble opinion, one of the worst things an artist can do to their career… become an elitist. One of the reasons we create is to communicate. If we allow ourselves to bloat with self-importance we can gag on our own egos. We are certainly making everyone around us gag. I really enjoyed Elizabeth’s take. Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote in last week’s poll: “What do you think of this newsletter's content?”
20% of you think “Too long.”
4% of you think “Too short.”
60% of you think “Just right.”
16% of you think “More cowbell.”
For the 16% of you that crave more cowbell… here you go.
✅ For the majority of you that think the length is fine as it is, we will leave it the same. Authortunities is basically a polished version of the calendar I have kept myself for years. I like having all the opportunities to choose from, even if I know realistically I will get to one. Thank you to everyone who voted!
Time for a new poll! Voting stays open for the next three days, and I’ll share the results in next week’s Authortunities. This week let’s keep it simple with:
❓Thank you to all the great sources we get our author opportunities from. You can find a list at 🔗https://angelaysmith.com/subscribe/ 🧡And that’s it from me this week. Enjoy this week’s Authortunities and go write something authentic.
