Authortunities #36 Nov. 25—Dec. 23
❗ INUJINI: first public reading ❗ ➕ How to boost sales with data analyzers ➕ FREE Space and Time #29 from March 1975 〓 150+ author opportunities for you!
Today’s anteater is brought to you by Authortunities reader and friend, Laura D.
For everyone in the US, Happy Thanksgiving. I want to take a minute to send a virtual hug out for everyone that doesn’t love the holiday season. I am okay with it now, but that used to be me.
The Horror Writers Association has a Mental Health Initiative with lots of helpful resources, including the free Of Horror and Hope anthology (edited by Lee Murray and myself) full of real life stories from people who have struggled and come through. Find all the resources offered on the HWA website here.
Bonus hug, all free subscribers up to November 21 should now have a paid subscription through December 28 so you can take advantage of that holiday downtime and get some extra submissions in. Happy virtual hug for the holiday!
I’ll be reading from Inujini for the first time at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival & CthulhuCon, a streaming event that will take place December 1-3, 2023 showcasing 6 feature films (including two streaming exclusives not see in theaters) and over 50 short films, from 16 countries. This fourth streaming H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival will be a standalone festival extravaganza also including dramatic performances, author readings, and panel discussions. Tickets available now. Events will remain available to stream until December 5th. Find tickets and more information here.
I also have a short nonfiction piece up on Funds for Writers called “Data Analyzers: Using Facts to Sell Your Fiction” all about how I use Book Report to map out my sales and strategize better. I never had a clue that my bestselling book is a children’s book called The Christmas Spiders, illustrated by Robin Wiesneth. I forgot that book even existed until I saw the data. You can read more about data analyzers and how to use them here.
Best thing I read onSubstack this week: From My Restless Dreams ... by Robert Ottone. I had the pleasure of interviewing Robert today for Exorcise Your Writes about his ghosts, cannibalism and how much cream cheese should go on a bagel. That show will air on December 9th here.
Today there’s also a video up on YouTube from the Unquiet Sisters speaking about the stories behind their essays in Unquiet Spirits: Essays by Asian Women in Horror. You can watch that video today here.
Last week’s poll asked “How serious is the current climbing trend of books being banned?” The results:
71% of you think “This is a crisis”
17% of you think “This shall soon pass”
12% of you are not worried.
✅ Time for a new poll!
What do you think? I’ll share the results next week.
🚀📦Be sure to collect your free issue of Space and Time magazine! This week’s issue is #29 from March 1975 and will be free from Sunday, November 26, 2023, 12:00 AM PST to Thursday, November 30, 2023, 11:59 PM PST.
This is a win-win. When you read for free you support the magazine with your Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count (KENPC). That’s money in our pocket that didn’t come from yours which we can put into more poetry, stories and art. As always, reviews and shares are welcome.
