Write Like Only You Can
How to Show Up Authentically Everywhere | Authortunities 111 | April 26 — May 24

My husband and I met online playing Lord of the Rings Online. He lived in Australia, and I was in the US, so we were friends for about two years before we finally met in person. When that day came, I was incredibly nervous, but he said something I'll never forget: “In person, you're exactly the same as you are online.”
We all try to present our best selves publicly, but one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is showing up authentically. I don’t believe in hiding flaws because, honestly, I don’t believe in flaws. Those unique quirks that make us who we are shouldn’t be seen as mistakes—they're character.
There's something deeply satisfying about authenticity—it builds trust, fosters connection, and makes relationships (online and offline) genuinely meaningful. Yet, I know firsthand that showing up authentically across multiple platforms can feel intimidating.
We've all been there: rewriting bios countless times, hesitating before hitting publish, questioning if our posts are "on brand" or relatable enough. But here's the secret: when you're truly authentic, you are your brand. You become unmistakably, unforgettably, and undeniably you.
Internal Clarity Fuels External Visibility
But before your authentic self can resonate with readers, you first need to recognize it clearly yourself. Internal clarity means deeply understanding who you are, what you stand for, and why you write. When your inner voice is clear, sharing it across bios, social media, websites, and submissions becomes second nature.
I learned this lesson the hard way as an accidental agent in someone else’s authenticity disaster. Before the internet, one of my friends was deeply involved in a phone relationship with a man who lived a few hours away. She constantly talked about meeting him but said was too afraid. Wanting to help, I had the misguided idea to pay for her mystery boyfriend to visit as a surprise for her. It was, predictably, a disaster. My friend hadn’t described herself honestly, leading to embarrassment, anger, and, sadly, the end of our friendship. That experience underscored for me just how essential authenticity truly is, not to mention all the other reasons this could have gone wrong.
Years later, I carried this lesson into my own long distance relationship. Before meeting my then boyfriend, now husband face-to-face, my greatest fear was that I had inadvertently misrepresented myself and would disappoint us both. Fifteen years of marriage later, we are still happy. Authenticity lets us relax into who we truly are which, honestly, is a relief.
Bring Your Voice Everywhere
Here's how you can translate internal clarity into external visibility across all platforms:
Say More by Saying Less: Bios aren’t a resume. They’re your essence distilled. Consider the one genuine thing you want readers to know, and write as if you’re warmly introducing yourself to a friend.
Keep It Real: Forget perfection. Authenticity resonates. Share stories, insights, even uncertainties. Authenticity isn't oversharing; it’s honestly sharing, revealing the human behind the posts.
Write Boldly, Submit Bravely: Submission anxiety often comes from fear of rejection—but authenticity isn’t about pleasing everyone. It’s about finding your true audience. Submit pieces that genuinely reflect your voice, even if they defy genre norms or industry expectations.
Authenticity is Magnetic
When you consistently show up as your true self, you attract readers who deeply resonate with your work. These readers become more than just readers—they become your community. Authentic writing doesn't just clarify who you are; it creates lasting bonds and opens doors to genuine opportunities.
You don't need permission to show up as yourself. We’ve been conditioned to chase artificial standards and external validation. Rejecting that notion is powerful. It undermines the industries that profit from our insecurity. Too bad for them, because we are absolutely fine just the way we are.

Whether it's a snappy social profile or a comprehensive intro for your next big event, this kit provides clear examples, practical tips, and expert-approved formulas to ensure your bio doesn't just inform—it connects.
