"Portrait of the Artist Obscured by Rescue Choweenie" Digital interruption on photograph, 2025. Private collection.

We realign our teeth, our tires, our priorities and even our chakras. You might have noticed Authortunities is undergoing its own realignment, too.

Change can be unsettling, especially when it comes from a place of intention rather than panic. Around the end of April, I began to sense that the newsletter needed something more, not necessarily more value, just a fresh perspective. But was that enough reason to realign my entire creative focus and pivot? Apparently, yes.

I was, like most of us, worried about what is going on in our wider world. I stepped back to examine everything I offer and asked myself: How am I actually helping my readers? What am I doing that matters?

After two months of beating my head against the problem, I found my answers… By the end of this realignment, I had a cohesive system that allowed me to share more with far less effort and a carefully planned 52-week Substack series addressing the six most common stress points Creatives face.

I wrote more about this back in April with “Build Your Intentional Content Plan.” I also have a few workshops and presentations coming up soon on similar topics:

  • May 31 “Building Your Author Platform Workshop” for Crystal Lake Publishing

  • June 12-15 is, of course StokerCon. Unfortunately, I will be attending remotely again this year.

  • June 16 “The power of Substack and how to optimize it for teaching” for Teachers of Fiction Writing 2025

  • June 27 “Horror Writers: Architects of Hope” for 2025 Authortube Writing Conference

Beyond realigning my content, I’ve also done some deep soul-searching. I've finally admitted to myself something I've believed since I was 16 but have been too nervous to talk about: thwarted and repressed creativity lies at the root of negativity. If creativity could run rampant, there would be less hostility in the world.

I deeply believe in creativity's transformative power. Fear dissolves when creativity thrives openly, free of judgment. By fostering safe spaces for authentic expression, I try to cultivate compassion, understanding, and meaningful connections. Love is creativity’s highest expression. By embracing our creations—and ourselves—with love, we invite genuine change and meaningful evolution that ripples beyond us to change our world.

So after I let all this bubble to the surface (yes, there was ugly crying), the big question became: How do I translate all this into something so simple I can say it in a breath, but so vast it encapsulates a universe? I wanted something powerful, portable, and easy to understand. The answer arrived clearly last week: an allegory.

And so here it is—the Avery Creator allegory. This allegory is the heart (or should I say, the Cor 😂) of everything I’m working on now. It’s my current WIP, the foundation of the coaching program I’m developing, and the core of the Authortunities community.

“That’s not a typo! Cor is Latin for the heart of your creativity. Your spark. Your truth. Your reason for making…”

It’s why I ran away from home at 16. It’s been the puzzle I have tried to solve since 2nd grade. I hope you’ll read it. I hope it resonates. More than anything, I hope you’ll share your thoughts with me so I can improve it. This allegory, and everything built upon it, is the most important creation of my life… aside from my four children.

For something so short, this has taken me 40 years to write it.
