My husband Ryan’s second foray into animation. Read Avery Maker’s Path here in English and now in Brazilian Portuguese.
It was 2022, and I thought I was living the dream.
I was a StokerCon winner in two categories, and I strolled into the mass book signing expecting an easy, quiet catch-up with two of my Tortured Willows co-authors, Lee Murray and Geneve Flynn (Christina Sng couldn’t make it).
Instead of the usual empty table and giveaway pile, I was met with a line. A long line with fans of our collection stretching down the ballroom, eager for signed copies. The energy was electric. This was the moment I’d always imagined.
And when it was over? I burst into tears. 😭
They weren’t happy tears.
It happened again this last week. I spoke at a high school, and afterward, students lined up to take photos and say hello. They were amazing. The school was welcoming. The experience was exactly what I’d want.
Yet at my next social event a few days later, I spent most of it holding back tears.
What was wrong with me? Both times, I asked myself that same question.
As I sat down to write this post, I realized the irony: here I am, writing about Sustainable Flow… by confessing my unsustainable overloads.
But maybe that’s the point. We are in this together. No one gets left behind!
I think we’ve all been there, teetering between two extremes:
One week, we hustle so hard to “make it” we lose track of time.
The next, we crash into burnout.
What if we didn’t have to live in that cycle?
What if, instead, we created a rhythm that actually feeds our life and our art?
What if we learned to manage, not just our time, but our energy?
The Core Concept
Sustainable flow isn’t about cramming more into your day. It’s about aligning your creative life with your natural energy cycles so your work and your well-being flourish.
That means building a rhythm that’s:
Personalized – based on your energy, not someone else’s routine.
Seasonal – shifting with the time of year and the season of your life.
Supportive – balancing creation, reflection, and restoration.
Crafting Our Creative Cadence
Here’s where we can start:
Weekly rituals – Anchor points that set our creative tone. Monday morning writing sprints, Wednesday reset walks, Friday reflection sessions.
Seasonal shifts – Align our focus with the seasons: plant new ideas in spring, expand in summer, refine in autumn, rest in winter. Reverse and reorder to find the best flow.
Monthly energy mapping – Track highs and lows to schedule demanding work when we naturally have more focus.
My Own Rhythm (and How It’s Evolving)
I have a bad case of unsustainable FOMO. If I don’t watch it, my schedule can swing wildly between overcommitment and collapse. It can be an all-or-nothing pendulum.
My goal is to adjust until my rhythm is more like a tide: gentle rises of activity, intentional retreats of rest. Mornings are for personal care, afternoons for life upkeep, and evenings for my main creative work. I’m getting better.
I’m still a work in progress. Like you, I’m navigating a culture that rewards making a living over… living. It takes trial, error, and a lot of self-compassion. But my aim is simple: create work that flows with me, not against me.
Your Turn
I’ve created a Rhythm-Mapping Worksheet + Habit Tracker for you to download. Inside, you’ll find space to chart your weekly rituals, seasonal shifts, and monthly energy cycles along with reflection prompts like:
When do I feel most energized?
What naturally restores me?
How can I build in seasonal rest?
Use it as a living document. This isn’t a one and done task. This is something you revisit and refine as your life and art evolve.
Why This Works
This is the final step in the arc we’ve been exploring:
The Rhythm – Today we are integrating it all into a sustainable creative flow.
Next week, we’ll wrap up August by preparing for re-entry into the hustle, but on our terms without the rush.
When you build a rhythm that nourishes you, your creativity stops being a battle… and starts becoming a partnership with yourself.
Download: Rhythm-Mapping Worksheet + Habit Tracker
A practical, printable tool to help you design a creative rhythm that works with your energy, not against it. Track your weekly rituals, plan seasonal shifts, and chart your monthly energy patterns using guided reflection prompts. Use it as a living document to refine your flow and keep your art and life in balance.

⭐ AUG 19 · Authors Guild v. NEH: Next Steps in the Legal Process On July 27, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York issued a ruling in the Authors Guild v.
