Authortunities #49 Feb. 24—Mar. 23
The Failure Issue ➕ Stoker Finalists Announced ➕ FREE Space and Time #34 from January 1976 〓 100s of author opportunities for you!
Ah, failure. So my goal for the past two nights was to pick the last few stories for issue S&T #146 so I can announce it in this issue of Authortunities… and then
called me. He and his husband got married this weekend and he received his first Bram Stoker Finalist for Bleeding Rainbows and Other Broken Spectrums. Fiiiine. That’s worth a few hours of congratulations and happy cheers. 🎉Unquiet Spirits: Essays by Asian Women in Horror, edited by myself and Lee Murray, also received a Bram Stoker Finalist along with three of the essays! Huge congratulations to
, Nadia Bulkin and Lee Murray for their essays. Working on this book has been to work on my own history, rebuilding bridges for my family.I also want to congratulate all my friends that made the ballot, including
, , , , , Rebecca Rowland, Sarah Read, , Jessica McHugh, Holly Lyn Walrath, , Cindy O'Quinn, , Kevin Wetmore… and I’m sure I’ve forgotten someone. Huge cheers to everyone who made the final ballot. You can read the full final ballot here.
Also speaking of failure… I accidentally hit Go Live when I meant to just pre-record the show with Lydia Prime. So anyone who was paying attention got to see me look shocked when the first comments came in and I realized we had an audience.
The show will be replaying again on schedule (March 1 at 1 pm CST) but I will be in the studio commenting live and sharing three reader submitted videos I couldn’t resist. The reader submitted videos I couldn’t resist sharing are…
Amy Zoellers
You can watch the original pre-recorded show with my added commentary and the three videos on below or on YouTube. Maybe Lydia will join me and we can both do reactions to the original show. 🤔
Space and Time Submissions Report
As noted above, my plans to finish choosing the last stories failed thanks to all the excitement this week. I will be announcing the ToC for Space and Time #146 here next week and on the Exercise Your Writes show with Lydia Prime on Friday, March 1.
To make up for my fail, I’ll also share in the notes section here as soon as it’s final.
As always, 🚀free Space and Time! This week’s free issue is #34 from January 1976. It will be free from Sunday until Wednesday, February 28, 2024, 11:59 PM PST. Get your free issue here: https://amzn.to/3T9sZmH
A big thank you to everyone who reads for free. This boosts our Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count (KENPC). As much as we all want to support each other, who can afford to buy every book? Reviews, shares, likes and KENPC are all easy ways to support your favorite authors. 🧡🧡🧡
Extended Audiobook Experiment
Failure again? I will test this during the next week.
The ebooks as Effective Promotion Experiment
I did this, but so far the results are fail…ing to impress. 😂 You can read the premise of the experiment in last week’s Authortunities or here. Bottom line, I’m confused.
Views and the open rate both went up, but total subscribers went down significantly. This is where the confusion comes in because I haven’t actually lost any subscribers (thank you!) so I’m either reading this wrong, or I don’t understand the metrics or Substack has a glitch.
Anyone have any ideas what happened here? So far I’m unimpressed by using ebooks as a means of promotion for a newsletter… but the experiment rolls on. Next week I’ll compare the download data on Kindle to the Substack data and see if there’s any correlation.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote in last week’s poll: “Be honest. Why do you write?” The results:
7% of you admitted “Fame.”
2% of you responded with “Money.”
7% of you said “Influence.”
84% of you said “Art.”
✅ First, there are no wrong answers here. It’s a personal choice and write. It’s also exactly the results I expected. Here is what I wonder… if most of us write for art’s sake than why are so many of us complaining about “writing for pennies,” “tossing words into the void,” and “reading to empty chairs?”
I don’t know the answer, but I wonder if the idea of the selfless, noble artist is fed to us so we will keep creating without little compensation? In ancient times, authors often relied on patronage from wealthy individuals or the state.
Today the opportunities for authors to earn a living through their writing have expanded with the rise of publishing houses, literary agents, digital publishing, and self-publishing platforms, yet, the market has also become more saturated. Many authors supplement their income with other activities such as teaching, speaking engagements, or other forms of employment. This all cuts into our time to write.
Right now the publishing world is in flux, but as Bruce Lee said, “In the middle of chaos lies opportunity.” Thanks to technology, we are being given the opportunity to recode our future and what it means to be a writer. I believe that artists can be rewarded for creating. To quote another giant, Friedrich Nietzsche, “One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.”
In the end, what price can we place on a dancing star? We create because, as creatives, we must. The current hustle culture tries to tell us to get busier, monetize, and broadcast… but none of that can come at the cost of creativity. Often the act of creating looks a lot like doing nothing.
And finally, thank you to all the great sources we get our author opportunities from. You can find a list at 🔗https://angelaysmith.com/subscribe/
