Authortunities #22 for August 16—September 13
Space and Time magazine needs more ☝🏼📚 First Readers ➕ Authortunities from other publishers ➕ free digital Fall 1994 vintage issue #84 〓 Read in 50 US states and 35 countries!
📰 Last minute addition! Space & Time editor emeritus Hildy Silverman has a Kickstarter that needs a push! Grandma Got Kidnapped By Aliens and Other Holiday Disasters is a forthcoming anthology edited by Hildy and to be published from Crazy 8 Press “featuring speculative fiction tales about holidays gone wrong.” If you have funds to spare, or even just a share… find Hildy’s Kickstarter here: 🔗https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/957966741/grandma-got-kidnapped-by-aliens-and-other-holiday-disasters
August has been lite on the opportunities but September is picking up.
First, a weird question. Has anyone else noticed the “heavy equals sign” emoji has vanished? Often used to signify equality, it’s now shown as a blank square when I look it up. I first noticed this three weeks ago when I wanted to add it here. Also, the pages that used to host the “heavy equals sign” are also breaking. The other math emojis are fine: ✖️➖➕➗. What you see above doesn’t match the math emoji set. It feels like foreshadowing to me… or am I thinking about this too much? ❓❓❓
Next, Space and Time magazine is recruiting First Readers to help out with an overabundance of submissions. Reading slush for us is pretty easy. You read at your own pace by self-selecting stories twice a year. We use Duotrope to collect our submissions. This is for speculative fiction, generally 3,000 words or less.
Our First Readers to also submit their own work to the magazine calls (and also know in advance when we have special calls). Reading slush is a great way to improve your own work by seeing what works and what doesn’t. This is a volunteer position but we try to offer perks as much as we can.

I’ve given away four issues so far out of 144. I’m going to mark out the ones I’ve given away with stars. ⭐⭐⭐ You can download that here: https://tinyurl.com/5aw46utf
I will be back with Authortunities Extra this week, the last one recorded at our current house. My new office will be in the back of a spacious walk in closet. The house is plenty big for me to have my own workroom, but I prefer small spaces. You can watch for that to resume here: https://youtu.be/2tU1BYj4PbI
But if you only have time to watch one video this week, save it for How To With Agents live with agents Alec Shane of Writers House, Becky LeJune of Bond Literary Agency, and Maeve MacLysaght of Copps Literary Services. This is part of the 🎃 HWA’s HALLOWEEN IN JULY fundraiser: https://www.pledge.to/halloween-in-july
And now, on to the main course. Enjoy the free issue of vintage Space and Time and don’t forget to check out Authortunities Extra tomorrow.
