After a decade of good intentions…
Finally, a newsletter. People have been signing up for my newsletter for over 10 years. For the last five I’ve joked that it’s “a fiction newsletter” because it didn’t actually exist. Some of you are close friends, others I may have met one time at a book fair. Regardless of how you got here, welcome. I hope you stay.
Because our time is precious, I’ll aim to keep this simple, useful and brief.
Three Paying Markets
KHOREO MAGAZINE We are looking for short fiction under 5,000 words. Because we are a new journal, we have a stricter budget and therefore prefer stories under 3,500 words. Stories must contain a speculative element in order to be considered. Only music-themed stories. Pays 10 cents/word. https://www.khoreomag.com/submissions-fiction/
MONARCH At Monarch, we’re committed to creating and publishing mental health articles that are clear, honest, and actionable. The typical length of articles we publish is 1,000-3,500 words, depending on the topic. Estimated pay $500 and up flat fee. https://meetmonarch.com/health-resources/monarch-writers-guidelines
SELF MAGAZINE is a mission-driven health and wellness brand. Our goal is to help people take good care of themselves, their loved ones, and their communities. Sometimes we do that by reporting on individual actions that can make a difference; sometimes we do it by highlighting efforts to make systemic or institutional change. We have a few main categories of focus: health, fitness, food, beauty, love (think sex and relationships, both romantic and otherwise), and lifestyle (travel, money, career, home, productivity, and so on). Currently our rates start at $300 for a story with minimal to no reporting, and increase from there. Reported service stories start at $400; features start at $800. As a general rule, we may pay more based on the amount of reporting expected for the piece, turnaround time, and special expertise. https://www.self.com/story/how-to-pitch-a-story-to-self
2. Two Helpful Tips
3. One Prompt
This image is for you. Feel free to use it wherever you want. Use it on your blog or books, make greeting cards, print T-shirts and sell them at an art fair… all yours. I created this image with Midjourney and it’s been licensed to me according to Midjourney. I gift it to you. (Click here for legaleze)
No strings attached, but I’d love to read your story of who you think this guy is. Where does he come from? What’s he reading? Write a flash fiction or poem, share wherever and please tag me. I can always be reached through my blog: angelaysmith.com.
I’ll share my own ekphrastic poem or flash from this next Tuesday on my blog.
See you next week!
I’ll be back next Wednesday with three new paying markets, two more tips, and another image prompt you can use how you like.
Until then, have an amazing week!
