Authortunities #106 │March 22 — April 19
🌞Good morning! I’m glad you’re here.
First, a big thank you and welcome to all the new paid subscribers! I’ll be opening the sign up to claim your Space and Time print ad discount after the next issue is released, which is also included as a subscription benefit.
This week’s downloadable tool is an automated Author Income & Expenses Annual Tracker spreadsheet with all the calculations built in. All you have to do is add your royalties and other income and your expenses. The spreadsheet will do the calculating for you. Save your braincells this tax year. Free subscribers can download the spreadsheet for just $8.88. Paid subscribers, your free download is just past the paywall.
The big news this week was a piece from The Atlantic that shared a way for authors to find out if their books were available on LibGen, a pirating site companies have used, including Facebook’s Meta, to train their AI. The Authors Guild has an informative write up with “Meta’s Massive AI Training Book Heist: What Authors Need to Know” you can read here.
I haven’t had time to look up my own books yet, or read what to do if I find them. Have you looked and what did you find?
We had our first Writers Block Party and it was a solid 5 hours of magic. We kicked the event off with who gave us some very enlightening, helpful and uncommon insight into publishing. From there, I was joined by Amy Zoellers McAnnally (Podcast in A Minor) as my co-host and we had a full house of readers join us including Sara Castaneda, Pixie Bruner, Nikki DeKeuster, Stephen Schwartz, Pete Kelly, ayana walker, Kristin Turner, Mark Doughtery… did I miss anyone? You can watch the recap, including Dale L. Roberts, here.
We ended the event by with a Burning of the Imposter (Syndrome). We wrote all the things that hold us back creatively and then banished them with fire. Join us on June 21 for the next one, or just join the Authortunities Hub now because we are always doing something creative and fun. Here is your free pass to this free community.
There is a lot going on in the Authortunities Press rooms…
Space and Time Magazine | Anthony R. Rhodes, the artist behind our beautiful layouts , is hard at work wrapping up the final pages. This just might be the most beautiful issue yet.
Space and Time Flash | As we finish up the other projects in our queue, we will be able to start working on this monthly project soon.
14 Spooky Stories for Boys and Girls | We might be adding one more name… and it’s someone I feel like everyone loves. I hope to announce the addition next week.
Coven of the East: Reclaiming Asian Women’s Magical Histories | We finished reading all the submissions and are sending out acceptances. I’ll be sharing that ToC next week.
Sara Castaneda has her first poetry collection, Underdog Bet, coming out March 27. A bright and beautiful read. Pre-order your copy here.
If you find you need more escape reading, LibraryThing just published their March list of their favorite comfort reads. Let your mental batteries recharge with some of these.
Good news! The Claw Machine: The Anthology fully funded their Kickstarter and then some. That means all the authors get paid (of which I am one). Thank you everyone for the support. Editor Elizabeth Mitchell has some great rewards and 12 days to go. See Claw Machine: The Anthology on Kickstarter here.
The submission spotlight is on Translunar Travelers Lounge this week, closing April 15 for submissions of speculative fiction (up to 5,000 words) in fantasy and science fiction genres. Payment is USD $0.03 per word, with a minimum of $20. They are in the calendar, or check them out here.
The Authors Guild has joined a powerful coalition of 18 organizations to call out what seems to be alarming government overreach threatening press freedom. Read “Authors Guild Calls on FCC Chair to Halt Media Intimidation” here.
